April Showers bring May Flowers

Well, it is nearly April and March is making sure that we have a last winter hurrah!  Last week started out in temps near the 70's but ended up Friday with temps in the low 40's and snow flurries.  Guess you can never count out March!

Crocuses are popping up in the front gardens, giving an illusion of spring!  Many other plants are pushing up but I still have no idea what most of it is, and if I did know, I forgot.  The Rose of Sharon bushes along the neighbor's fence are starting to show little green buds, but we have got to get out there and thin them out.  Last year, they filled out the fenced side with loads of trees and flowers.  It looked great but was attacked pretty badly with those darn beetles!  Hopefully, we can make it look a little more clean and not so overgrown!

Moxie is growing up quickly, she is 8 months old and grown to about 8 1/2 pounds!  She keeps us laughing everyday!  One of her favorite things to do is hide her treats around the living room and hallway.  Unfortunately, her hiding spots leave a lot to be desired!  The first one she always goes to is putting the treat next the the fireplace and pretends like no one could see it!  If you walk towards it, she kinda panics and has to run and grab and start looking for a new hiding place.  She enjoys going outside and got to meet the neighbor dog, Isabelle, a few weeks back.  They had quite the conversation!  She finished her Puppy class at Pet Smart in January and we have been a little lax on keeping up with the practice.  We really need to work on some of those tricks again. Looking at going on to do the Intermediate class later this spring.  She is such a good cuddler in the mornings, it makes it hard to get up and go to work!

Looking forward to getting out into the gardens this spring!  We have ordered and gotten the brackets for our raised garden beds but now the hard part - getting around to putting them together!  Got to clear out the grass, put down some weed paper and filling them up with soil!  Maybe we'll have some stuff growing next year!  We are also looking at putting in a fence this summer so Moxie can run, run, run and not flip herself over when she gets to the end of her lead.  Which, while not nice, is EXTREMELY Funny!!

Other plans around the compound...

Going to Branson in May for a long weekend.  Still looking for some suggestions for interesting spots to visit.  So far, several people suggested just not going...not really an option!  We hope the weather will cooperate as we are looking forward to doing some hiking and outdoorsy kinda stuff!  June finds me going to Wisconsin to visit a friend's cottage for a "Book Club Retreat."  Makes you want to join book club, doesn't it!  Kent plans to take some time for lounging around in June, hopefully the weather will be good for that!  We are planning to go to Iowa in July for a Bodensteiner family reunion and spending a little extra time with the fam.  Seems like time just keeps flying by!

Well, that's a little update from the Bone Compound!  Stop on by anytime!  See you soon!

All right - what's new around the Bone compound...

Ok folks - here is the long awaited Bone compound update!!  I know everyone is eagerly gripping the edge of their seats!

Over the last few months, Kent and I have been keeping quite busy with Moxie and general homeowner responsiblities!

Moxie joined us the end of September and we can hardly imagine life without her anymore!  She makes us laugh, grrrr and smile every single day!  Yes - I realize we are talking about a dog - but she is our child!  She is a spunky, little Shorkie - a mix of Shih tzu and Yorkie.  She is fuzzy and clever!  The first week we had her home, Kent and I both took several days off work in order to work on getting her comfy and potty trained in her new home.  Thank goodness we did that, because the first Monday, I got a call at work from Kent saying we had a pipe spraying water all over the basement!  It would have been MUCH worse if no one had been home to find it!  Well, after we got the plumber over and all was repaired, it turned out that we had illegal gas and water lines and a less than stellar water heater!  One would like to think that the home inspection would have caught such an important thing as copper gas lines and far too small of water lines, but I guess that's not necessarily the kind of things our inspector was looking for!  So our little leak ended up costing almost $2000.00!  Ah, the joys of homeownership!

Moxie was about 2.2 pounds at her first vet visit and is now a WHOOPING 5 1/2 to 6 pounds!  I'm pretty sure most of it is fluff!  She went to class at the local PetSmart and graduated at the top of her class in Puppy Training.  (Ok - she was the only one in her class but that doesn't change the ranking!)    She can do sit, down, beg, stay, come, leave it, take it - but mostly she does it when SHE wants, not necessarily when we want her to do it!  In the spring, we plan to go on to the Intermediate class to keep working on skills.  Hopefully, she will be behaved well enough to go to the hospital and visit patients when she is old enough!

Halloween was a fun time at our very own home!  We got around 50 trick or treaters and we had some pretty great costumes come through the neighborhood!  Moxie was also in the spirit with her Count Dracula costume!

Hmmmm - other news around the town - Brian got engaged to Aimee and they are planning a fall wedding!  Finally - I get another sister!!!  'Bout time, Brian!!

Of course, no update would be complete without a note about the Hawkeyes and their bowl win!!!!  AWESOME!!!  Too bad that makes next year's ticket more expensive and we will have to wait another year to introduce Kent to the blinding beauty that is Kinnick Stadium!!!!!!

The new year snuck in and here we are in February already!  No big plans for vacations this year - working on the house is the only big plan we have.  We are taking a short trip to Branson in May - never been but looking forward to any suggestions you Blog Followers may have for us!

Kent and the snow blower have gotten quite a workout this year already!  We had a big blizzard the first of February and ended up with about 14 inches of snow!  Blowing and drifting and snowing like crazy - makes me think of Iowa!!

Looking forward to posting some photos of Moxie and the house as the Spring warms things up!

Getting ready for baby...

Well, been a while since I did a blog update - already getting behind!  Got lots to catch up on so...

In Busta news:

Marilyn reported that there are some "new" cousins in the Czech Republic.  Not sure if that means she found them or they found her.  Will have to get more info on that front.

Jenny wrote in and let me know that all is well at the Law household.  Jenny is back to work for the school year, Max in in daycare and Vincent is in the 3rd grade.  I can hardly believe that!!  When did that little guy grow up!!

Elaine wrote in and let me know that Alyssa was having her baby.  I should have called this Busta section of the Blog - "Always the last to know!"  I didn't even know she was pregnant!!  Nothing new there though!!  She did indeed have a baby GIRL!  Finally!  Her name is Eisley Emma (not sure on the spelling) and she was born on September 10, also Dad's birthday.  Not sure of the measurements but sounds like all are doing well.  We will have to see if we can get any photos or more info from her or Betty.

That is all from the Busta department at this time - keep the updates coming!  You can always email me to give me info to put in the blog.

News from the Bone Compound...

Been a busy 2 weeks around here.  Getting the house cleaned up and ready for our first official house party!  It took some doing since I am a pretty messy person and have little to no motivation for cleaning when the weather is nice.  We have had some pretty great weather around here lately too!  Mid- to upper 70's to lower 80's, sunny.  Can not complain about that!  We had our first house party on Monday, it was really a "puppy shower!"  We had lots of fun with it - served hot dogs, puppy chow...all in good fun!  We got some great gifts from friends including treats and toys for our new puppy.

Oliver and Abby

This week we also we dog sitting for Kent's mom while she enjoyed a much needed break in Florida.  We had Abby and Oliver most of the week.  They settled in pretty well after the first day or so and we found that it was easy to entertain them by moving a chair over to the picture window and letting them watch the squirrels all day long...I spent a few extra days home from work with them as I got the annual stomach flu.  YUCK!!  No details needed...

Looking forward to this weekend - good weather and plans for watching the Morton Pumpkin parade to see Kent's 2 nieces marching with their school band.  Lexy is carrying the banner and Kate is one of the drum majorettes!  Pretty cool!  I think I am going to be sure to bring my camera to see if I can get a photo of me and Aaron Schock - who is from Peoria and is one of our state's congressmen...you may have seen him on TMZ!

Corn Maze at Tanner's

We may also try to get to Tanner's orchard which is a big thing around these parts!  It is a lot of fun and they do have really great treats including apple cider donuts!  We usually get one dozen to eat and one to put in the freezer!  The apples are great and so is the cider.  One time we took the nieces along and went in the Corn Maze - I never saw so much corn and got so confused!  I don't think we ever figured it out!  We ended up coming back out the way we went in - I don't think that is quite right!  It is usually so busy there that it gets a little crazy but hopefully it won't be too bad yet!

One more week before we take our trip up to Lancaster, WI to get our puppy!  We have almost everything ready, except for the food and water dishes, the kennel, the collar, the leash, you know - everything!!!  We do have treats and toys though!!  We are waiting until we get there to determine what kind of dog we are getting.  We want to see the temperament of dogs before we choose.  But they have mixes of all kinds including Shih tzus, Lhasas, miniature poodles, Yorkies, Bichon, etc.  They are all so cute - hopefully, it won't be too hard to decide!!  But of course, taking the trip to WI means we will be missing our annual trip to Fort for the rendezvous!  Well, some things will have to be saved for another time!!  Also means I will be missing celebrating the birthday with Ashley at Happy Joe's!!  Now that part is crummy!  But we will just have to do it next time we come up north!

Well that is all the news for now from the Boneyard!  Be sure to email me if you have info or updates!  I love being in touch with friends and family - even if I am slow at it!!

Have a great week and see you around the compound soon...
Karen and Kent!

P.S. One of these days I'll get our photos from this year's Jamaica trip posted too!  I finally got last year's Florida trip up!  I'm getting pretty good at this blogging thing!!!

Be a Follower...

All right Bone Blog fans - become a follower and stay up to date on what is happening!  I guess we finally figured out that you have to have s Google, Yahoo or Twitter account to sign in and be counted as a follower.  (Because we all have twitter accounts...)  What benefit could there possibly be to being a follower?  I have no IDEA!!  I guess that you probably get updates about new posts and such.  Anyway - it also gives you a chance to comment and for us to see your cute little picture on the side.

So - new around the Bone compound...
Quick shout out to Paula who celebrated a birthday on Thursday.  Happy Birthday to my OLDEST sister.  Yeah - I can say that!  Makes me feel better about my upcoming birthday!
Also coming up - Neil's birthday on the 10.  I think that Annie and Nick have birthdays in the early part of September but I could be wrong.  They will have to blog on to let us know so we can properly wish them the best.  Any other birthdays in September?  Be sure to let us know - easiest way to keep track of things!!

Of course - the very most important birthdays are this month - ME and ASHLEY on the 27th.  So start thinking of all the wonderful gift ideas and great stuff for us!

Labor Day weekend!
I have 4 whole days off from work in which to spend pulling weeds, mowing and other exciting outdoors adventures on the compound.  At least the weather will be cooperating this time!  Supposed to be in the upper 70's to low 80's for most of the weekend.  Should be able to get most of the gardens cleaned up before fall.  I will have to post some photos sometime of the house and gardens.  The hostas are looking a little yellow about now but I think the rain the other night helped a bit.  So - what does one do with hostas in the fall to prepare for the winter?  Any and all suggestions are encouraged and welcomed!!

The squirrels are spending most the time digging holes in my gardens and planting walnuts and acorns for the winter - that's kinda annoying but also cute to watch them digging.  They try so hard with their little arms...  Finally got the finches to come back after a long hiatus from the broken feeder.  Still haven't tried to suet feeder again since the horrible raccoon attack...darn raccoon pried the thing open and ate all my suet 2 nights in a row.  Will have to find a way to prevent that!

Well, that is all the news from the compound for now...look for a later weekend update about the gardening.  Maybe I can figure out a few more things on the blog page to load up some photos.

Also - getting to be about time to try making some kolaches again!  Will let you know when that happens and how it all turns out!!

Happy Labor Day!!

P.S. - I thought I would try a link to see if it works!  Here is the link to Lynn's shop!

First Blog!

Well, here it is!  I finally decided to give a try!  We'll see how well this keeps everyone in touch and up to date!!

Not much happening on the Bone Compound these days.  Getting the house ready for puppy.  That's right - we're getting a puppy!  The end of September, to be exact.  While we haven't quite decided on what kind of dog it will be, we already have a name picked out.  But - it's gonna be a secret for now!  Anyway - other than that - getting the house all put together, which is good since we've been in it for 5 months!  You can finally see the dining room - even got some pictures hung up!  Looking forward to our first Halloween in the house.  We have no idea how many trick or treaters to expect so we will have to ask the neighbors!

So - feel free to drop by the blog any time to read up on what's going on in the Bone compound and be sure to leave messages for everyone to know how each of you are doing too!
